Summary

The charming first book in a new early-reader series, starring the spirited — and outspoken — Anne Shirley as she first arrives at Green Gables。

Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert need help on their farm, so they’ve adopted what they hope will be a sturdy, helpful boy。 Instead, Matthew finds Anne awaiting him at the train station — imaginative, brash, redheaded Anne-with-an-e。 With her place at the Cuthberts’ at risk — particularly if nosy neighbor Mrs。 Lynde has anything to say about it — Anne will have to learn patience, understanding and what it takes to make Green Gables her true home。

Lovingly adapted by Kallie George with beautiful, nostalgic illustrations by Abigail Halpin, Anne Arrives is perfect for new fans of Anne and old。

For over a century, Anne Shirley has inspired girls and women- regardless of their obstacles- to first dream, then strive to make them a reality。 With lovely illustrations, now beginner readers can make her acquaintance。

This is really cute and a great way to introduce younger generations to Anne

I love that these darling stories are being abridged, illustrated and made available for younger readers。 Perfect for those moments when you need a little taste of Anne with an “e”! The illustrations are precious。

Isabella

This was really cute! Ugh, I just love Anne of Green Gables。

Karlie

I love this story。 This edition is beautifully illustrated and was a fun one to read with my 8 year old daughter。 We are looking forward to reading the next in the series。

It is a lovely adaptation, but it just can’t compare to the original。

A very abridged version of the story for early readers。 I do wonder how it would feel to a child reading the story for the first time, without being familiar with it already。 I couldn't read it through an objective lens since I already know and love the story! Beautiful pictures。 Simple retelling of the beginning of Anne of Green Gables。 For young readers。 (Still prefer the book itself)

This is a delightful adaptation for young readers of the beginning of Anne of Green Gables。 The language maintains the sound and feel of Montgomery’s text。 Southern Maine Artist, Abigail Halpin’s pictures are the perfect illustrations of what is happening g on each two page spread。 A wonderful introduction to the classic Anne of Green Gables。

Forreste

Perfect capture of Anne in words and watercolor。

I am confident all Anne enthusiasts will love this adaptation!! It captures the essence of Anne and honors the writing of Lucy Maud!!I love that students can enter the world of LM Montgomery at a younger age。The illustrations are wonderful!!

This is such a lovely retelling of the beginning of Anne of Green Gables, and even though the language is simplified it still captures the spirit of Anne。 My kids were not familiar with the story before I read it to them, and they also enjoyed it and the beautiful illustrations。 The chapters are short enough that I read several in one sitting, and I think my 2nd grader could have read this on her own。 I immediately checked out the 2nd book Anne's Kindred Spirits: Inspired by Anne of Green Gables This is such a lovely retelling of the beginning of Anne of Green Gables, and even though the language is simplified it still captures the spirit of Anne。 My kids were not familiar with the story before I read it to them, and they also enjoyed it and the beautiful illustrations。 The chapters are short enough that I read several in one sitting, and I think my 2nd grader could have read this on her own。 I immediately checked out the 2nd book Anne's Kindred Spirits: Inspired by Anne of Green Gables, which we haven't started yet and I'm very curious how it will handle (or not) the cordial incident。 。。。more

Cuento infantil, pero vale mucho la pena por las ilustraciones

Super sweet little chapter book。 I bought for my daughter (6) for Christmas。 Will be a great intro to Anne hat she can (mostly) read herself/read to me。 Great opportunity to introduce some of the older vocabulary of their expressions, to be more familiar if/when I read the real series to her in a few years。

Kayla

Lovely introduction to the series for my 7-year-old!

An early-reader adaptation of the classic, Anne of Green Gables。 The story was a *very* basic outline, but the pictures were absolutely breathtaking。

Charming, accessible introduction to one of the world's great heroines, we plan to use this early reader chapter book series in our Upper School Library to support our English as an Additional Lanuage and emerging reader students。 In this first book in the series, Anne with an "e" arrives from a Canadian orphanage to Prince Edward Island, where Marilla Cuthbert is waiting to welcome a young orphan boy to help her brother Matthew on their farm, Green Gables。 When Matthew brings home a skinny, red Charming, accessible introduction to one of the world's great heroines, we plan to use this early reader chapter book series in our Upper School Library to support our English as an Additional Lanuage and emerging reader students。 In this first book in the series, Anne with an "e" arrives from a Canadian orphanage to Prince Edward Island, where Marilla Cuthbert is waiting to welcome a young orphan boy to help her brother Matthew on their farm, Green Gables。 When Matthew brings home a skinny, red-headed, passionate girl who won't stop talking instead, Marilla is aghast as is their nosy neighbor Mrs。 Lynde。 Marilla sets off with Anne the very next day intending to return her to the orphanage, but when an unpleasant neighbor with multiple children thinks of "adopting" Anne to care for them and "earn her keep", Marilla cannot let that happen and takes Anne home again to Green Gables。 Forecasting nothing but trouble with Anne, Mrs。 Lynde makes herself very unpleasant and Anne loses her temper and subsequently learns how much she means already to quiet, gentle Matthew and the internally fiery Marilla。 Lovingly abridged and the well-known introductory conflict resolved, readers old and new will be eager for the next book as Anne has finally found home at last and now needs to find a friend。 The illustrations by Abigail Halpin are timeless and magical with softly rich double-paged spreads punctuating key moments in Anne's transition from no family to forever family。 。。。more

Ooh, I have such conflicted feelings about this book!Abigail Halpin's illustrations are absolutely wonderful。 They evoke PEI so well。 The colors are rich and warm, drawing the reader right into domestic scenes and landscapes。 Quilts, braided rugs, wallpaper, teapot cozies, workbaskets, beflowered hats that would send Anne herself into raptures。。。Halpin has given us a rare treat。 Besides a nightgown, Anne wears the same linsey-woolsey dress for the whole book (accuracy!), and Halpin captures such Ooh, I have such conflicted feelings about this book!Abigail Halpin's illustrations are absolutely wonderful。 They evoke PEI so well。 The colors are rich and warm, drawing the reader right into domestic scenes and landscapes。 Quilts, braided rugs, wallpaper, teapot cozies, workbaskets, beflowered hats that would send Anne herself into raptures。。。Halpin has given us a rare treat。 Besides a nightgown, Anne wears the same linsey-woolsey dress for the whole book (accuracy!), and Halpin captures such feeling in the skirt--it hangs limp when Anne is discouraged, and crackles with energy when she angers Mrs。 Lynde。 Matthew also has book-accurate long hair and a beard! Huzzah!Yet。。。。the fashions clearly set this in the Edwardian era。 Can we please stop pretending Anne of Green Gables takes place 30 years later than it does? The 1980s adaptation set the story in the Edwardian era。 Montgomery did publish the books in the early 1900s, but she clearly had a fictional timeline established, setting the story in the late 1870s。 If the Edwardians had not resurrected the puffed sleeves trend, I wonder if we'd have such a kerfuffle about the chronological setting of these books。 Historical detail should be preserved with accuracy because kids notice these things。 If Anne Arrives is supposed to be an adaptation of the book, as the cover claims, rather than the TV movie, then it should place the story in its proper setting。 The location wasn't changed, so why should they change the decade?I'm also not sure of the intended audience for this book。 It's the type of book that Anne-loving (or Anne-conscious) parents would give to their children, but the reading level targets the ages when Anne makes a great read-aloud (~7 and up)。 Maybe kids will pick this one out at the library and get interested in Anne, or a younger sibling can enjoy adapted Anne at their level while an older sibling gets the real deal。 Since much of the richness and humor of Montgomery's language is (necessarily) lost in adaptation, I don't see much literary value in the adaptation。 All in all, it's not a book I'd give to a young reader, but not one I'd discourage them from reading。 It's the kiddie Bible version of Anne, and loses a lot of flavor along the way。Kallie George has written two Anne-inspired picture books, Goodnight, Anne and If I Couldn't Be Anne, both of which look like they capture the spirit of the books well。 I will be on the hunt for those, and of course reading Anne's Kindred Spirits, because I can't resist this red-haired girl。 。。。more

This is the sweetest version of Anne of Green Gables I've come across。 This is the perfect way to introduce a new reader to Anne。 The art work is darling and I am looking forward to adding the rest of these adaptations to my collection。 This is the sweetest version of Anne of Green Gables I've come across。 This is the perfect way to introduce a new reader to Anne。 The art work is darling and I am looking forward to adding the rest of these adaptations to my collection。 。。。more

I really love all the recent additions to the books featuring Anne of Green Gables。 This relatively new chapter book series is the perfect bridge between books like "Goodnight, Anne" in the picture book section and the Anne of Green Gable novels。 Kallie George uses spare prose that covers all the highlights giving us a coherent tale with plenty of details to be discovered later。 The pictures by Abigail Halpin are beautifully rendered with rich detail。 Highly recommended! I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 This book is absolutely gorgeous。 I am a huge fan of Anne of Green Gables, so I was eager to read it。 I love that it has been adapted for younger readers who will hopefully fall in love with the character of Anne and later move on to LM Montgomery's version。 I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 This book is absolutely gorgeous。 I am a huge fan of Anne of Green Gables, so I was eager to read it。 I love that it has been adapted for younger readers who will hopefully fall in love with the character of Anne and later move on to LM Montgomery's version。 。。。more

Beautiful early chapter book! My daughter has enjoyed watching the Anne reboot but was neither ready to read or be read the original novels (she is 7)。 This first in a series was faithful to the original story, accessible to her (I would compare reading level to the Princess in Black books), and gorgeously illustrated!
